On Tuesday, 3rd September, 2019, – The Federal Government of Nigeria commissions the largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa at Bayero University, Kano (BUK) under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP).
As a result, 55,815 students and 3,077 staff now have access to electricity supply from the university’s 7.1MW solar hybrid power plant.

On Monday, 19th August, 2019, REA commissioned the first Rural Electrification Fund (REF) Minigrid at Upake Village in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State. Also, Upake is the first of 12 communities on the first call of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) - based on Public Private Partnership (PPP).
The project will benefit 2,879 people in Upake and others in neighbouring community Obangede in Ajaokuta with clean, safe, reliable and affordable electricity.

The commissioning of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI) is the first project to be commissioned under the Energizing Education Programme.
The university now enjoys:
Constant, clean, safe & reliable power supply from a solar hybrid power plant with a total installed capacity of 2.8MW.
An environment free from generator noise and carbon dioxide emission.
Academic growth & uninterrupted power for 7,700 students & 1,819 staff members of the university.
Streetlights to enhance security within the university campus
A world class workshop/training Centre to train students in renewable energy technology
Female empowerment through the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) internship programme, which currently enrols 20 female students in the university, and a total of 180 students selected across 9 universities; 20 per university.
And guess what? This is only phase one, kicking off with nine universities & one teaching hospital. More to come!

Under implementation by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Energizing Education Programme (EEP) is a federal government intervention focused on developing off-grid dedicated independent power plants, rehabilitating existing distribution infrastructure to supply clean, safe and reliable power to 37 federal universities and 7 affiliated university teaching hospitals.

Nigeria is gradually improving in harnessing solar energy for development. The emerging renewable off-grid energy sector, being driven by the Rural Electrification Agency, is poised to generate significant impact for Nigerian markets, unserved and underserved communities, teaching hospitals, and institutions of higher learning.
