- The initiative aims to nurture a new generation of skilled professionals in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
In a bid to close the skills gap in the renewable energy sector and empower young leaders, furnishing them with the requisite skills to lead in the fast-growing clean energy sector in Nigeria, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in partnership with the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and the Ecological Innovation Empowerment Initiative (EIEI) have launched the NEXT GEN RESCO Programme. Now open for application to young prospective Nigerians, the 12-month long programme offers 60 successful applicants with a unique opportunity to gain quality industry knowledge, learn from industry experts and collaborate with key stakeholders in the energy sector.
In the last 8 months, the REA has played a central role in revolutionizing the clean energy ecosystem, mainstreaming the Federal Government’s scale-up approach to the implementation of clean energy projects, nationwide. As the nation advances efforts in the strategic optimization of renewable energy projects for growth and sustainable development, the REA has sustained its advocacy on the need for improved governance structure amongst private sector players to delivery more wholesome and sustainable services to Nigerians. Through what the Agency calls the Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESOCs), the REA understands that sustaining a private sector-driven ecosystem requires the best technical, analytical and leadership skills.
This is in line with the futuristic approach of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on youth inclusion, sustainable development and national scale-up of renewable energy infrastructure in Nigeria. Through the Federal Ministry of Power, the sector continues to advance efforts in leveraging the 2023 Electricity Act passed into Law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu upon assumption of office. The Act, the futuristic blueprint for the Nigeria Electricity Market, has aided strategic multi-stakeholder engagements between the private sector, sub-nationals, development institutions and investors. As the Federal Government accelerates the growth of the clean energy ecosystem, the launch of the NEXT GEN RESCO programme is a strategic move to upskill young leaders to match the imminent growth in the sector.
Leveraging its close-knit strategic engagements with the Renewable Energy Service Companies, the REA has equally secured the buy-in of the private sector on better service delivery, and investment in innovation, research and development. Upon the successful completion of the 12-month programme, the NEXT Gen RESCO Cohorts will have the opportunity to secure active roles in private sector companies in Nigeria, optimizing the skills garnered from the NEXT GEN RESCO Programme.
The programme will feature:
- An intensive training on renewable energy systems and leadership development.
- Hands-on experience with leading companies in the sector.
- Networking opportunities with industry leaders and professionals.
- Internship exposure to real-world challenges and solutions in the renewable energy landscape.
In a bid to ensure inclusion and equal opportunities, the collaborating agencies have set inclusive eligibility criteria, with applications open to:
