Courtesy visit to National Television Authority (NTA) A delegation led by the MD/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency paid a courtesy visit to NTA on the 9th of July 2024. The MD/CEO REA Abbah Abubakar Aliu expressed that REA Plays a vital and very significant role in the Nigerian electrification Journey.
To Create electricity access to the un-serve and under served Communities. Looking at the world bank report, the MD stated that, Nigeria has
the highest number of Un-serve and under serve people in the word. The MD expressed his concerns over the 85 million Nigerians without access to electricity. REA’s mandate is to help address this electricity gap by providing mini gridsand extended grid. REA is committed to provide Solar mini grids and solar home systems to communities that are vastly populated. One of REA’s biggest project is the national electrification plan where every Single Nigerian will be be given the opportunity to have access to electricity. The MD announced that REA has implemented a project called the Nigerian electrification project.(NEP) Funded by the word bank and African development bank. The NEP project has impacted the lives of over 7.8 million Nigerians by providing them with Soler mini-grids, solar home systems and also intervening in the Key sectors of the Nigerian economy. The MD shade light on mini grid and high grid projects in health and tertiary institutions.
REA through its programme energising education provided the universities and teaching hospital with electricity. The energising education project
will be implemented in phases. Phase 2 of this project has 7 universities and 2 teaching hospitals: and and all this projects are about to be completed. One of such interventions are 3 mega watts here in Abuja, 6 mega watts in Uyo, Garshuwa, Umudike and Abekokuta.
The phase 3 of this project has already started. 3 of this projects covers 8 universities and one teaching hospital. REA is to planning to Provide 350,000
Students access to electricity The MD appreciated this present government for providing funding and the opportunities to intervene in these universities and tertiary institutions. 100 mega watts built across these universities. REA has built a world Class training centre where opportunity will be provided for continuous building of talent that will have practical experience in deployment and management of renewable energy. The MD further mentioned that 100 STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) students will be trained in each of these universities. For gender Inclusion strategy, the MD announced that the agency has a scheme for 20 female STEM students that will be actively engaged from soil testing of the project to the commissioning.
REA has deployed over 160 solar mini grids across the country. He continued to highlight REA’s noticeable presence in all the local government areas in Nigeria. The MD is pleased with the government of president Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s audacious leadership by approving 750 million dollars project that is to begin in August. This is the biggest public Sector founded off-grid project in the entire world. “Rather than scratch the Surface, lets dare the challenge and See how we can address electricity access issues Squarely” said Abbah Aliu. To do this, REA will electrify 3 million Nigerians using the isolated mini grid, 1.5 million through the inter connected mini grid. 15 million Nigerians will have access through the mesh grid solar standard.
REA will also provide about 243,000 small and medium enterprises with what is called projective use of equipment solutions. In order to show transparency and accountability, REA for the first time is about to publish the implementation report of the agency’s capital project.
REA will go all out to show Nigerians how the funds appropriated to REA is put into good use further showcasing where and how the funds is spent. The MD thanked the DG and executive management of the biggest television channel in Africa for their tremendous work and acceptance to help propagate this report.
The Director general National Television Authority NTA Saliu Abdulramin Dembos welcomed REA team with opened hands. The DG agreed that NTA has a very big task to bring to the fore what REA is doing including the ones they will embark on in future. He further advised on the need to safeguard and protect this projects. “Vandalisation of this equipments can cripple the economy and affect living standard of the people” said Saliu Abdulramin,
